the spain capital

were in Madrid around last month and spent 3 sunny days there. I like Madrid, I should say. Architecture in Madrid is somehow adorable .... the building scale .... the golden ratio windows all over the town (not only on the old building, the new buildings also religiously keep the golden section ratio) .... and also their Zapateria (shoe store it is, haha)

I've explored Andalucia region and been to Madrid yet still haven't seen Barcelona. It's just exactly like saving the best for the last, right?

tapas and treadmill

I turned 24 two days ago .... the number really freaks me out. Oh my I'm twenty four ..... twenty four boy! My biggest wish would be finish to my study and being able to stand on my own feet. Since booth wishes are impossible for now , I better keep running constantly in this "treadmill machine" ..... prepare myself for the real life marathon.

ps. pictures above are from a restaurant in Sevilla (xmas holiday 2009) ... we only had casual Tapas, but I love how pretty the dinnerware were.

spain 6 / Sevilla and Cordoba

with many historic sites, real big old town area, outstanding Flamenco shows ( the live Flamenco show is like 10 times greater than Flamenco show in Discovery Travel in Living), tempting shopping arcade, and yet cheap foods and souvenirs - Sevilla is definitely my fave city in Andalusia. Noddie, I would love to go back there someday .... shall we plan our trip?

Plaza del Espana, Sevilla

Giralda (Minaret Tower), Sevilla

after Sevilla i spent 2 nights in Cordoba. Was thrilled to met Upi there. In my opinion...... well the Mezquita Catheral is magic, but the others are just so-so. The river is grubby (reminds me of beautiful Indonesia hihi). Perhaps because I was tired after more than 1 week travelling - so I kind of lost my couriousity to explore Cordoba...

Pheww typing this post really makes me want to travel back to Andalusia. Stuttgart is damn cold and I try my best not to whine over the weather .... I'm happy actually, because when Spring comes soon - it will be my first Spring experience, exxxcccciteddd :)

spain 4 / ronda

here comes again another post about Spain (man I'm bored of these holiday report, but I want to finish what I've started). The 4th city is Ronda, a small city with breathtaking geographical landscape (Wiki : "the Guadalevin River runs through the city, dividing it in two and carving out the steep, 100 plus meters deep El Tajo canyon upon which the city perches")

The weather wasn't friendly at all during my 2 nights stopover in Ronda, it was raining like crazy ...... I even took a few amount of photos there. As usual, we ate Tapas ..... and also Paella (there in Ronda I had my 3rd Paella and decided that my tongue don't like Paella ....... my Indonesian tongue like fried rice better). I took a tour inside bullfight arena and the museum ...... and in the end I understand why is it important for the Spanish to mess up with bull.

as usual, here comes some photo strip .......

hello Taurus my zodiac

no wonder Spanish people are very chic, look at their bullfight costume

Huuuuuaa i gotta sleep now ..... another busy week starts again tomorrow ....

spain 3 / antequera

after Granada, we drove down to Costa del Sol and sleep for 1 night in Nerja. I barely saw the beach in Nerja ........ arrived there around 9 pm and continue the journey to Ronda via Antequera the next morning. After drove for about 1.5 hours from Nerja, we reached Antequera (my favorite white village) I can't explain much about Antequera's history and so on hehehehe ...... just let Mr.Wikipedia do his job.

neighbourhood on the hilltop, with Alcazaba as a background

the word derives from the Arabic word Al-casbah, a walled-fortification in a city

Spanish are genius when it comes to decorating inner court

I really had a good time in Antequera. We parked the rented car in basement public parking in the city center. From there we just walked walked and walked ........ following the "historic site" sign ...... until where reached the hilltop. Every single small hill in Andalusian's Village are really worth to climb ....... marvellous view from the top of the hill, always like that. Always baby, always.

the weather was blah

I can't get enough of this pueblos blancos view

confirmed, I really can't get enough of these white houses

no way, too cute neighbourhood

random courtyard near the city center

primadona of the day, putri salju ala Spanyol

After some historical walk, we walked down to city center ....... passing some friendly neighbourhood ...... buy almost 5 kg of Christmas sweets (rasanya kayak kue putri salju tapi pake almond, yummyyyy) ....... had tapas (we basically ate tapas everyday during the holiday, hehe) ..... and then drove up to the next destination : RONDA!

spain 2 / granada

I have to write that the best part of Granada beside Alhambra is my Hostel (El Granado). It's near from the city center, clean, cheap, breakfast included, newly renovated, and their staff are very very helpful. As I checked in, the receptionist (A Swedish man live in Spain because he's in love with Spanish woman) explained all the important things I need to know there in Granada. He explained briefly that Granada divided into 3 part : Moslem area, Jewish area, and Catholic area. He showed from which point in the city we could see a fantastic view. He even told us the trick to get a free tapas in a bar....

El Granado, best backpacker hostel i've ever visited

Albaicin neighbourhood

Nasrid Palace, Alhambra

Alhambra is exactly as beautiful as I imagined before. From my point of view- the Islamic Architecture is naturally beautiful. With symetrical plan and facade, broken-white marmor, water element in inner court, arabic writings caligraphy, colorful mozaic tiles, haaah too beautiful to be true. It's simply enchanting in a modest way. Too bad I didn't get the chance to see all the part of Alhambra, I skiped Generallife Garden- due to heavy rain.

Albaicin (was a Moslem area - and now kind of Gipsy area) is a hill near the Alhambra, you could see Granada's city center from there. Then comes the Catholic area - there you could find a Cathedral, shopping passage and souvenir kiosk.

a yummy yummy yummy cake with ice cream

The foods and tapas bar in Granada are grrrrreat. Only in Granada you could get a free tapas when you order a drink in a tapas bar during the happy hour. I ordered Coca Cola in first bar and get a free plate of Paella, then i hop to the next bar and ordered Orange Juice and get a free plate of Bocadillos. Each drink cost 1,90 Eur ...... so total 3,80 Eur for drinks and a delicious dinner :)
I would love to go back to Granada one day..... and bounce from one bar to another!

spain 1 / train in Spain

I always wanted to make a nice journal about my travel, but always failed. I'm blah when it comes to writing ....... and I always ended up posting more photos than writing practical information. But - let me try once again to make a nice travel journal. okay, humm. it will be cheesy, but i have no option haha :)

map of Andalusia region

tram in Sevilla

San Sebastian's central station

I went on X'mas break to Andalusia, Spain for 12 days. From Germany, it will take you minimum about 1 day to reach south Spain by train. As usual you could always count on Deutsche Bahn (German's Railway Company) in Germany. Clean wagon, complete information, ontime schedule, everything is correct! From Paris, I have to take night train. Actually there is this Euronight train leaving daily from Paris at around 8 pm and reach Madrid at 9 am the next day. Surprise surprise, only 1st class ticket available on this comfortable connection - which is expensive!

So no choice for me, I took a Lunea train from Paris to Irun (first city in Spain reached by this train - located in the France-Spain border) I supposed to arrive in Irun at 7.30 am, but darn SNCF (France's Railway Company) - the train arrived 1 hour late from scheduled time. And another surprise surprise, the train leaving to Madrid from Irun left exactly when I reached Irun. No time to catch the train at all, since I still haven't got the ticket for Irun-Madrid. For this cross country trip, I only could buy the train ticket on the spot. There's only 2 connection daily from border to Madrid, and the next connection is at 4 pm. I was forced wait for 7 hours in the middle of nowhere in Spain, yay or nay? YAY. The officer in the train station informed that San Sebastian is only 20 mins away from Irun, the the city is beautiful. Thanks RENFE (Spain's Railway Company) ...... you gave me opportunity to saw North Atlantic Ocean from San Sebastian.

Around 4 pm I continue my journey to Madrid. Everything was okay until I suddenly have to change train in the middle of nowwhere. The train arrived behind the scheduled time in Madrid, but okay no complain needed since there was snow overall Europe ..... and I was to tired after 35 hours journey. Fortunately it is very easy to find a hotel/hostel near Madrid Puerta Atocha Station. And finally the next day at noon I reached Granada with a direct 4 hours train from Madrid. Sharp 48 hours journey with train that makes me feel ........ young again, ahahahaha.

The train connection for my return journey was more ass-friendly. I spent 25 hours to reach Stuttgart, with no delayed schedule. I took AVE train from Cordoba Central to Barcelona Sants. (Spain's AVE train is exact same with German's ICE train ..... Spain bought the waggon from Siemens) Then from Barcelona Central I took regional train to Cerbère, France. It's near from the France-Spain border. There, I waited for about 3 hours ...... and then took 9 hours Lunea train to Strasburg. It took about 2.5 hours and 3 regional trains from Strasburg to Stuttgart. Actually there's TGV Strasburg-Stuttgart, but they're pricey and often fully booked in holiday season.

Oh my I'm such a train station freak and railway technology freak ..... I really enjoy typing this boring post. Excuse my lame interest ....

French Lunea train: 4-6 beds in 2nd class compartment

un-friendly stormy weather

Otw to Antequera, a bit flood here and there

leaving Barcelona with a bit rainbow

Ah ja, I rented a car when I was in Spain. The price - compare to other Western European countries : affordable and reasonable. I pick up an Opel sedan (as big as Toyota Yaris) in Granada and return it 5 days later in Sevilla for 112 Euro. Gasoline in Spain will cost you 1,03 Euro per litre. Driving in Spain is just okay ...... no serious traffic (except in the city center of course), and it is easy to find a parking spot. The highway are also okay (haha my standard is very low : highway in Indonesia) If you make a budget-group-trip in Spain and would love to see more, renting a car in Andalusia is recommended.

Except when reaching the hotel from train station with heavy backpack in Sevilla and Cordoba, in every city I didn't get in to any single public transportation. Any single historic sites in Sevilla, Granada and Cordoba are reachable on foot. I even walk all the way up to Alhambra in Granada (ngos ngosan juga sih akhirnya, haha) Very cheap than 5,5 Euro daily ticket in Paris, right? hhmmmmm ....... what else? around 10 minutes taxi ride cost around 11 Euro (Upi, I'll always remember that silly-euphoric-sad-rainy night in Cordoba haha..... met up with you really makes my trip perfect)

how to ended a post properly, actually? I'm out of words, bye.

after more than 50 hours in train

Zaragoza main train station, Spain

Stuttgart - via Paris Austerlitz - via Irun - San Sebastian - via Madrid - Granada - Nerja - Antequera - Ronda - Olvera - Arcos de la Frontera - Sevilla - Cordoba - via Barcelona - via Cerbere - via Strasbourg - and finally after endless hours in the train i'm back in Stuttgart now.
Tons of pictures from Andalusia coming soon ( if i'm not too lazy )
The holiday all in all was great, though it's been raining like crazy in Andalusia - but I really love the part that I visited some white villages (pueblos blancos) and ate many delicious Tapas.
